Harry looked small, almost frail under the blankets. Severus’ breath caught in his throat, and momentarily horrified, he paused at the door. And how am I going to fix this?
“Go on in, sir,” said the mediwitch. “He’s been waiting for you.”
At the sound of her voice, Harry’s eyes opened. The moment he spotted Severus, his eyes lit up. “There you are,” he whispered. “I wondered when you were going to show up to berate me.”
Severus carefully sat on the edge of the bed. “Be sure the berating shall commence once you’re more able to withstand my wrath,” he said, swallowing hard as he took Harry’s hand in his.
Harry’s smile faded. “I look that bad, hm?”
Severus’ hand tightened on Harry’s fingers. “They tell me the hex you took broke several of your bones and caused neurologic damage, so yes, I’m...concerned.”
“Well you know how it is.” Harry cleared his throat, his voice getting stronger. “Being an Auror can be a tough job.”
“Am I going to have to go out with you on all your calls and cast protection spells on you from now on?” asked Severus, not joking.
“That would probably interfere with your brewing schedule.” Harry’s smile was back. “You know, as I’ve been lying here, I’ve been thinking about retiring and going to teach Defence at Hogwarts. Being an Auror is a young man’s game.”
“As long as no one expected me to teach as well, you’d get no objections from me,” said Severus, finally starting to relax. “When they Floo called me--” His voice broke and he looked away.
“I’m sorry, Severus.” Harry sighed. “I would give anything to not upset you.”
“And I would give anything to see you not get hurt.” Leaning in, Severus rested his forehead against Harry’s. “I realise you have a calling. I just wish--”
“That I wasn’t an Auror?” The words were soft.
“That you were as determined to save yourself as you seem to be to save everyone else.” Drawing back, Severus stared into Harry’s eyes. “Surely you didn’t save the world from evil and darkness only to get taken out by some petty, illegal potion smuggler?”
“At least I got him.”
“And he almost got you.” Severus shook his head. “I’m not sure how long I can go on like this, Harry. I worry about you coming home and I spend every night sitting by the Floo in case I get notified of an accident or worse.”
Harry stiffened. “So what does that mean? Are you breaking up with me?”
Severus’ mouth dropped open in surprise. “What?” He frowned. “How could you ask that?”
Harry relaxed slightly. “Sorry, it just sounded like--”
“I am committed to you, Harry. We’re bonded, body and soul. No, I’m not breaking up with you.” Severus sighed. “But something does have to change.”
“I agree.” Harry took a big breath. “Which is why I put in for a transfer.”
Severus blinked. “A transfer?”
“I wasn’t going to tell you in case it didn’t happen.” Harry entwined his fingers with Severus’. “But Robards has been after me to apply for the Head Auror job, so I finally put my name in.” He smiled. “He was in here earlier and said they want to offer me the job.”
“Head Auror would mean you wouldn’t be out in the field as much.” Severus hummed. “Would you be all right with that? I know you like being in the thick of things--”
“I was serious about what I said earlier. I was thinking about retiring. But I don’t want to. This would be the best of both worlds.” Harry smiled. “And I’d be in charge of training the recruits. That should help keep me in shape.”
“Well you’re hardly fat,” said Severus.
“Because I’m on active Auror duty.” Harry pursed his lips. “I’m not sure I could eat as much of your delicious pie as I usually do if I take a desk job, though.” He grinned. “You won’t leave me if I get fat, will you?”
Severus snorted. “Indeed not.” Slowly, he smirked. “And I’m sure I can come up with an alternate workout programme in the unlikely event it becomes necessary.” His thumb stroked the base of Harry’s suggestively.
Harry chuckled, leaning close enough to nuzzle Severus’ jaw. “I knew you’d have a solution.”
Severus gathered him close. Exhaling, he closed his eyes, buried his face in Harry’s hair, and smiled. “Don’t I always?”

Date: 2014-01-15 07:30 pm (UTC)I like how they talked through their issues without allowing things to descend into a row and their loving banter towards the end lifted the mood of the story enough to leave me hoping that everything will be alright with Harry's health, despite Severus' obvious worry.
This is a truly lovely piece, ali. I enjoyed reading it immensely.

Date: 2014-01-20 02:23 am (UTC)Severus was pretty worried, bless him. And he knows how reckless Harry can be in the pursuit of his duty, so he was understandably concerned.
I'm so pleased the way they sorted their issue worked for you!
And I wouldn't worry about Harry. He'll be fine once he has some of Severus' pie. ;)
Thank you, sweetie!
