Perfect Costume

~

“Look.” Remus handed Severus the mail.

“A costume ball?”

“Could be fun.”

Severus raised an eyebrow. “You realise there’s no chance I’ll attend, yes?”

“It’s for war heroes.”

Severus snorted. “Your point?”

Remus smiled. “There’s a cash stipend for attending.”

Severus hummed noncommittally. “Oh?”

“Yes. You have to wear a costume to get it, but it’s one hundred Galleons, so nothing to sneeze at.”

“Indeed. Are there requirements as to the costume?”

Remus blinked. “Not that I can tell. Why? You’re not actually considering going--?”

“A hundred Galleons is a hundred Galleons.” Severus rose. “Come, time to pick our costumes.”

~

“You’re sure?” Remus inspected himself in the mirror. “This costume is quite...revealing.”

“It suits you,” murmured Severus, giving him a slow once-over. “Very well, actually.”

Remus hummed, pleased. “You’re sure this isn’t just a ruse to get me to wear a short skirt in public?”

“Would I do that?”

Remus laughed. “You totally would. You like my legs.”

“I’m shocked you think that of me.”

Grinning, Remus began disrobing. “Sorry. Anyway, now that we’ve picked my outfit, what are you going to wear?”

Severus reached for him. “I’ll think of something. Now, let me help you out of that--”

A week later they entered the Ministry’s ballroom arm-in-arm. Remus smiled. “This looks lovely.”

Severus hummed. “It’s...tolerable.” Snagging champagne from a floating tray, he sipped. “How do we ensure that we get the stipend?”

Remus chuckled. “I believe someone official has to see us here.”

“Indeed.” Severus looked around. “Let’s find someone official, then.”

Kingsley, dressed as an Egyptian pharaoh, smiled as they approached. “Hello, Remus. Nice costume.” He looked Severus up and down. “And, Severus. I’m not sure I understand yours.”

Severus smirked. “I’m a Potions master.”

“Right.” Kingsley sighed. “I suppose it counts.”

Severus smirked. “It’d better.”

Once Kingsley moved away, Severus manoeuvred them towards the exit. “Time to go.”

“Already?” asked Remus. “After all, I went to the trouble of wearing this costume.”

“Indeed.” Severus’ gaze as it swept over Remus was sizzling. “And I appreciate that. That’s why we should leave now that we’ve been seen.” Leaning in, he purred, “I’ve been dying to get you out of that costume all night, and I suspect they frown at public fornication.”

Remus chuckled. “You’re incorrigible.”

“Are you really going to argue?” asked Severus, steering Remus out.

Remus hummed as Severus patted his arse. “Not at all.”
