Blind Date

“You look lovely,” said Luna.

“You really do,” agreed Ginny.

Neville grimaced at his reflection. “Must I wear this flower?”

“Yes! That’s how he’ll know you’re his date.” Ginny batted his hand away.

“And he’s wearing one, too?” Neville sighed. “This seems very convoluted. Wouldn’t it be easier if you just told me who I’ll be meeting?”

Luna began to reply, but Ginny stopped her. “No. Trust us, it’s better this way. Now come on.” She gestured to the Floo. “You don’t want to be late.”

Neville emerged from the Floo and looked around. Recognising someone, he blinked. Surely not--

When Draco Malfoy saw Neville approaching, he raised an eyebrow. “Longbottom.” His eyes widened when he spotted the green flower on Neville’s lapel. “Salazar. You’re my date?”

Neville coughed. “Apparently. I guess no one told you who you’d be meeting either?”

“Pansy arranged it with some friends,” said Malfoy. “I wasn’t consulted.”

“If you’d rather not--” Neville started to turn away.

“No, wait.” Malfoy pursed his lips. “I’m game if you are.”

Neville paused. “Why?” he asked bluntly.

Malfoy shrugged. “You clean up nicely. And I haven’t been on a date in a year. Why not?”

Neville hummed. “All right.”

They seated themselves and after the waiter took their orders, Malfoy turned to Neville. “So what do you do?”

“I manage a flower shop in Diagon and do some Herbology case consultation for the DMLE on the side. You?”

Malfoy smiled. “I’m an Unspeakable. And now I know who’s responsible for the Auror corps’ success in tracking illegal potion makers. They have help.”

Neville blushed. “I do what I can.”

“And very well, too.” Malfoy gave him a slow, admiring once-over. “So, what about when you’re not working?”

Neville smiled. “I go on dates.”

Malfoy smirked. “How fortunate for me.”

They chatted over dinner. Malfoy, who proved charmingly flirty, surprised Neville. He’d known he was capable of charm, just not that he’d use that charm on Neville.

“You’re being nice,” Neville said when pudding arrived.

“You sound surprised.” Malfoy raised an eyebrow. “It’s been a while since I’ve been on a date, but I thought that was still expected behaviour.”

Neville smiled. “No, I mean, you’re being really nice. It’s just...surprising.”

“Well, it’s to my advantage.”

“Oh?”

Malfoy leaned forward. “Naturally. Being nice to you now means you may be nice to me later.”

Ooooh. I like that last line. "TBC" has a great ring to it. I think Neville/Draco may be a new favorite of mine.
