Precious Cargo

Sarah was practically vibrating with excitement when they emerged onto the platform. “Look! There it is!”
Kingsley smiled. “It’s waiting for you.”
She shot him a doubtful look. “Would it really wait if I were late?”
“It’s best we not take that chance,” Kingsley said. “Now, hug us and then off you go.”
For a moment when she turned towards him, Kingsley saw the adult she would become. Then she smiled and was all little girl. “Bye, Daddy,” she whispered, hugging him.
And, as the train departed, Kingsley’s hand tightened on his wife’s.
“Precious cargo,” she murmured.
Kingsley smiled. “Indeed.”
