A Lasting Presence
~
Harry hurries through the Ministry’s lobby. If he’s not present at roll call Robards won’t be amused. Distracted, he strides straight into someone. Arms circle him, steadying him.
Embarrassed, Harry looks up, eyes widening. “Snape?”
Snape steps back. “Potter.”
Harry blinks. “Sorry about that.”
“Indeed,” Snape says, turning away.
“Wait,” says Harry. “I’ve been meaning to owl you. Do you have a minute to talk?”
“I am early for an appointment.” Snape raises an eyebrow. “I was under the impression you’re in a hurry, however.”
Harry sighs. “I’m already late, what’s a few more minutes? Coffee?”
Snape nods. “Lead on.”
~
“You missed roll call. What happened?” Ron asks upon seeing Harry.
“Encountered Snape in the lobby--”
“Bloody hell,” Ron sighs. “When are you seeing him again?”
Harry frowns. “I never said--”
Ron snorts. “I was present when you first fell for the Half-Blood Prince, remember? And when you insisted on saving him in the Shack. I know how you feel about him.”
Blushing, Harry looks away. “I used to have a crush on him--”
“Still do, mate.” Ron smirks. “So...what’d he need?”
Harry grins. “Shop licence. I’m...expediting it.”
Ron nods. “Nice. So, what’s the plan?”
“Friendship.”
“Good luck.”
~
Harry waits three days before visiting Snape. Snape looks surprised upon seeing him. “Auror Potter. Your presence...honours my shop. Is this visit official?”
“No.” Harry smiles. “Just passing by. How’s business?”
Snape gestures around the empty shop. “Slow.”
“I bet it’ll pick up soon. You only just got the licence, right?”
“Indeed.” Snape starts chopping. “It occurred the same day I saw you in the Ministry. I was surprised.”
“Why?”
“Licences typically take longer.” Snape hums. “Perhaps I had assistance.”
Harry smiles blandly. “Perhaps.”
Snape eyes Harry piercingly. “Well, whoever assisted me has my thanks.”
Harry coughs. You’re welcome.
~
Harry visits every other day. He knows Snape’s curious as to why, but he never asks. Maybe because business is picking up, thinks Harry, pushing his way through the crowd the following week.
“Potter.” Snape finally greets him once the last of the customers has been served. “Good day.”
Harry smiles. “Business is booming.”
“Due, I suspect, to your frequent presence.”
Harry blushes. “I hope I’m not a bother. I just...like visiting.”
“Indeed, I can hardly complain,” murmurs Snape. “After all you’re...good for business.”
Harry keeps his smile, but wonders if Snape thinks that’s all he’s good for.
~
Squaring his shoulders, Harry enters Snape’s shop. He’s timed it carefully. It’s one minute before closing and he knows Snape’s punctual. The shop’s empty.
“We’re closing--Ah, there you are.” Snape appears from the back. “I’d wondered if I’d see you today.”
Harry smiles tentatively. “Miss me?”
“Well, you are a near constant presence here,” Snape says.
“I was wondering if you’d like to go to dinner.” Harry holds his breath.
Snape leans against the counter. “On a date?” he asks quietly.
Harry nods.
Snape hums. “I’d wondered what your visits were about.”
“Is that a yes?”
Snape smiles. “Indeed.”
~
Dinner morphs into drinks at Harry’s, which becomes snogging on the sofa. When Harry invites Snape to bed, he hesitates, however. Harry immediately backs off. “We don’t have to--”
Snape shakes his head. “I want to, I just-- Your presence in my life is...important to me. I want to preserve that.”
Touched, Harry clasps his hand. “Me, too.” He smiles. “Although right now I’m a bit desperate for your presence in my bed.”
“Indeed.” Snape smirks, palming Harry’s erection. “Yes, I do sense some measure of desperation. Let’s...handle that, shall we?”
And happily, he does an expert job.
~
“Is Severus coming?” asks Molly when Harry arrives at the Burrow for dinner.
Harry nods. “Yes, he just had some last minute brewing.”
“Good.” Molly pats his arm. “I never thought I’d say this, but Severus has been good for you. You’re...happier. His presence in your life has made a big difference.”
Surprised, Harry blinks at her, not sure how to respond. A moment later, the Floo activates and Severus steps through, making a bee-line for Harry. “There you are,” he murmurs, kissing him lightly.
Harry smiles, linking their fingers, soothed by Severus’ touch. “Yep. Here I am.”

Date: 2014-04-21 09:39 pm (UTC)I loved Severus' small hesitance when confronted with the prospect of becoming physically intimate for the first time. His reluctance to do anything that may end up damaging the easy friendship he'd developed with Harry felt really IC.
This is a brilliantly paced romantic tale that left me smiling from ear to ear. Well done, ali. Well done indeed. :)

Date: 2014-04-25 11:16 pm (UTC)*nods* I think Severus gives himself utterly and completely, so he'd be very hesitant about jeopardizing their relationship. Happily, Harry had no such concerns.
Thank you, my dear! And I am always thrilled when I can get someone to smile. :)
