Finding His Heart’s Desire
~
Neville stumbled across Heart’s Desire by accident. Looking back years later he wondered if the shop’d found him, but that day he’d just been wandering Diagon Alley, at loose ends.
Heart’s Desire was irresistible, with its hanging baskets and colourful flowers, and before long he’d entered and started browsing.
“May I help you?” The proprietor smiled.
“Yes.” Neville nodded at the fanged geraniums. “However did you manage to breed Fangus geranius with those shaped leaves?”
Five minutes into the conversation, the man hired Neville, and three months later, he deeded the shop over to him. Neville had found his calling.
~
Since Heart’s Desire was tucked out of the way, Neville didn’t get much foot traffic. He therefore told all his friends, inviting them in to purchase flowers and plants as gifts.
There was, he found, a pattern to their buying. George came every two weeks for flowers for Angelina, Ron bought weekly peonies for Hermione, and Harry-- Harry was curious. Neville knew he wasn’t dating Ginny, because Dean bought her flowers, but Harry’s purchases consisted of plants that doubled as potion ingredients.
Neville just watched and waited for the appropriate announcements, and life was simple, uncomplicated. Until the feud started.
~
It began simply enough. “I need something to impress a potential mother-in-law,” asked Cho Chang one day, browsing.
Neville pursed his lips. “May I ask who it is?”
Cho coughed. “I’d rather not say, but let’s just say she’s very traditional.”
“Well, I’ve found that these miniature rose bushes often impress people.” Neville gestured towards the collection.
Cho beamed. “Perfect!”
When Padma came in later that day, Neville didn’t immediately connect the visits. “What would impress a bloke’s mum?” she asked.
She ended up buying a miniature Dirigible Plum plant, and Neville thought nothing more of it. Until things escalated.
~
“You never told me about Dirigible Plums!” Cho accused the following week. “Padma won!”
Neville, taken aback, coughed. “Excuse me? Won what?”
“The contest! Give me something more exotic,” Cho demanded.
“Right.” Neville came from behind the counter. “A bonsai Whomping Willow maybe--?”
But when Padma heard about that purchase, things intensified. “No,” Neville said when she stormed in. “They don’t make decorative Mandrake plants!”
It wasn’t until a week had passed that he found out who they were feuding over.
“Longbottom.” Draco Malfoy, looking edible, entered the shop, peering around. “Right. Why are you trying to ruin my life?”
~
“Has your mother enjoyed the plants at least?” Neville asked once Draco explained Padma and Cho’s strategy of courting Draco by showering Narcissa with gifts.
“She loves them. The only thing saving me is that she’s busy renovating the Manor.” Draco groaned. “Those girls will be the death of me.”
“Choose one, maybe--”
Draco huffed. “Are you mad? I’m gay!”
“You, too, hm?” Neville bit back a smile when Draco perked up. “I’ve always found honesty to be best. Maybe if you told them--”
“I have.” Draco hummed. “I’ll tell you all about it over a pint.”
Neville smiled. “Deal.”
~
A pint turned into dinner, which turned into Neville going back to Draco’s flat with him afterwards. And, when he stumbled to work the following morning, exhausted and sore in all the right places, he couldn’t stop smiling.
Cho and Padma seemed oblivious that Draco was taken, but as they’d exhausted Neville’s supply of exotic plants, they moved on, finding other places to continue their feud.
Draco became a fixture at the shop, and, after three months, Neville invited him to move in.
A year later, Draco was working side by side with Neville. Neville had found his heart’s desire.
