A Telling Truth

Harry blinked upon entering the restaurant to see Ron, Ginny, Hermione and Luna waiting for him. “When you invited me to lunch, I thought it was just going to be us,” he said to Hermione as he sat. He grinned. “This isn’t an intervention, is it?”
Ron choked.
Harry raised an eyebrow. “That wasn’t a reassuring response. What’s wrong?”
Ginny cleared her throat. “Harry, we need to tell you something, please just hear us out.”
“Okay--”
Hermione was carefully choosing her words. “We’ve been talking, and we believe--”
“You’re in love with Snape, Harry,” said Luna. “Now, who wants pudding?”
~
Severus froze. “Would you repeat that, Minerva?”
Minerva exchanged a look with both Filius and Poppy. “We believe you’re in love with Harry.”
Severus’ hands started to shake, so he hid them in his lap. “And your evidence?” he asked dryly.
“The way you talk about him.” Poppy smiled. “Do you realise you see him every day?”
Severus snorted. “Indeed. As we work together it’s difficult not to.”
“I don’t see Potter every day,” said Filius. “And we work together, too--”
“Are you telling me you’re in love with Potter, too, Filius?”
Minerva sighed. “Severus, please. Just...think about it.”
~
“There’s nothing to think about,” said Harry. “We’re colleagues, friends even, but he doesn’t feel that way about me, and I--” He paused.
“Yes?” said Hermione, leaning in. “What? Tell us.”
Harry sighed. “I like Severus, I’m even sort of attracted to him, but--”
Ron raised an arm. Hermione frowned. “You don’t need permission to speak, Ron.”
Ron shook his head. “I know. I’m trying to get the waiter’s attention. I need a drink.”
Hermione rolled her eyes. “You’ve been attracted to Snape since sixth year, Harry. What you feel now is deeper. We all see it. Why can’t you?”
~
“Perhaps because the idea of us...together is so outside the realm of possibility that I’ve dismissed it,” said Severus softly. “Perhaps because just admitting the possibility opens me up to pain.”
Minerva patted his shoulder. “You can’t honestly tell us that Harry would hurt you.”
“Not deliberately, no.” Severus squared his shoulders and looked up at them, his friends. “But that isn’t always enough.”
Poppy tilted her head. “I think you should trust your instincts. What do they say?”
Severus blinked, then pushed back from the table. “I have to go.”
“Wait--” But it was too late, Severus Disapparated.
~
They appeared simultaneously in front of each other. Harry, upon seeing Severus, smiled. “Hello. I was just thinking about you.”
Severus nodded, slowly moving towards him. “I was thinking about you, too.”
Harry swallowed hard. “Do you think that maybe we could--?”
“Talk?” Severus finished.
“Yes. I’ve something to tell you.”
Severus was close enough to touch Harry. He extended his hand. “I’ve something to tell you, too.”
The jolt of awareness when their hands touched was electric, magical. Harry, pouring everything into his eyes, stared at Severus. “I look forward to hearing it.”
Severus’ smile was sweet, fearless. “Good.”

Date: 2014-06-05 03:31 pm (UTC)I really liked how you have each boy pick up the thread of the conversation the other one was having in their own vignette. I drives home the point that they both are on the same page about each other, even though they were honestly clueless about the real nature of their own emotions. This is a wonderful beginning to their happily ever after, one that I not only enjoyed reading thoroughly, but that also left me smiling in the end.

Date: 2014-06-07 11:26 pm (UTC)This was a bit of an experiment, but I do like the way it turned out. As you say, it did rather drive home the fact that they are meant to be. :)
I'm thrilled you enjoyed it, hon!
