Going Home: Part Eleven

Once Harry had explained the situation, Hermione immediately went into scientific mode, of course. “And what did you say his symptoms were?” she asked, jotting notes.

“I’m not sure of his exact symptoms, but he looks like he’s turning into a creature like Voldemort was before he died. All snakelike, with scaly skin and no nose. And he hisses a lot.”

Hermione raised an eyebrow. “I’m not familiar with the curse, but it sounds fascinating—”

“Does that mean you’re willing to help Lucius?” Harry interrupted. “I know it’s your week off, but—”

“Of course I’ll help!” Hermione smiled. “I wasn’t looking forward to a week of Molly trying to teach me all her domestic skills again.” She sobered. “Although, to be clear, I’m doing it for you and Draco, not Lucius. What sort of an idiot pretends to disown his own son supposedly for being gay in order to protect him from a curse? Honestly—”

“In his defence, I suppose he was trying to prevent Draco from getting whatever he’s got.” Harry shook his head. “But I agree. They were idiots, and I told them so.”

“Oh, Harry!” Hermione covered her mouth with her hand, her eyes shining with amusement. “You didn’t!”

“I totally did.” Harry sighed. “I’d heard enough of Narcissa’s nonsense. I don’t think they realised what they put Draco through with all that.”

“Not just him,” said Hermione. She paused. “So, how do you feel about Draco reconciling with them?”

Harry shrugged. “I guess it’s fine.”

Hermione narrowed her eyes. “It doesn’t make you nervous?”

“Why would it?”

“Because the Draco I’ve come to know over the past few years is a different man from the Draco who lived in Malfoy Manor and invoked his father’s name at the drop of a hat.” Hermione shook her head. “I’d hate to see him become that person again.”

“That’s not going to happen,” said Harry. “Draco’s nothing like that anymore.”

“I hope you’re right.” Hermione looked down at her notes. “Looks like I’m going to need to do some research.”

“I figured. How can I help?” asked Harry.

“Can you get me into the Unspeakable Library?” Hermione asked.

Harry raised an eyebrow. “Don’t you have your own library? And even if you don’t, there’s always St Mungo’s—”

“Those don’t have the right information,” Hermione said. “I need some references on esoteric curse reversal charms as well as on cellular morphinism and—”

Harry held up a hand. “Stop right there. I’m not going to understand this, so save it for when you get to the Manor.” Harry hesitated. “Are you okay with going there? I mean, the last time you were in the building—”

“I know and I’m fine.” Hermione pressed her lips together. “I’m a different person, and the person who tortured me is dead.”

“But Lucius and Narcissa watched her do it, didn’t they?”

“They did, but they didn’t enjoy it like she did.” Hermione’s eyes went distant. “The look of pleasure on her face was…” She shuddered.

“I can see if Lucius will agree to meet you in your office,” said Harry. “Although he looks pretty bad.”

“No, I can go to him.” Hermione exhaled. “It’s time I saw Malfoy Manor in a new light, especially if you and Draco are likely to start going there again.”

“I don’t know how often that will be,” Harry said. “Although we have been invited for a Malfoy family Christmas dinner.” He made a face. “Narcissa thinks we can be one big, happy family.”

“Sounds uncomfortable,” said Hermione. “Are you going to go?”

“Not sure.” Harry shrugged. “And at least we don’t have to make that decision immediately. Anyway, since you want to go to the Ministry, shall we meet at the visitor’s entrance?”

“All right. Meet me there in five minutes.”

Once the Floo closed, Harry stood up, stretching his back. “Kreacher!” he cried.

Kreacher popped into view. “Master Harry.”

“Have you finished collecting Draco’s parchments?” At Kreacher’s nod, he continued, “Please take them to Malfoy Manor, and let Draco know Hermione and I are stopping by the Ministry to check their library for some references. Let him know I will be there in about thirty minutes.”

“Of course, Master Harry.”

After Kreacher disappeared, Harry went up to his and Draco’s bedroom to collect some items. Then, using the bedroom’s Floo, he travelled to the Ministry’s public entrance.

Hermione was already standing beside the red phone booth, a book in her hand. She looked up as Harry approached. “There you are.”

“Sorry, had to pack some things for us if we’re going to be stay at Malfoy Manor.”

“Are you?”

Harry shrugged. “That depends on Draco. Although I’m not keen on sleeping there. That place has always felt creepy to me.”

Hermione nodded. “Me, too. Right, shall we do this?”

“Absolutely.” Opening the phone booth, Harry gestured Hermione inside and dialled the number. “Next stop, Ministry lobby.”
