Going Home: Part Thirteen

~

Steering Hermione out of the lift, Harry scanned the hallway before leading her towards one of the private meeting rooms. After checking to see it was empty, he led her inside and closed the door, pushing her into a chair.

There were cups and a water fountain at one end of the room, and pouring her some water, he took it to her. “Drink this,” he said.

Not saying a word, Hermione took the cup, downing it with a gulp.

“Do you need more?” Harry asked.

Hermione shook her head. “No,” she said, sounding subdued. “Thank you.”

Sighing, Harry sat, rolling his chair closer to her. “Want to tell me what’s going on?”

Exhaling a shaky breath, Hermione stared at her hands. “Ron’s been pressing for us to have children,” she said, tone soft. “And I do want them, I do. Only it feels as if it’s coming from Molly, because every time we visit, she’s the one who brings up how Ginny’s already pregnant, and Bill and Fleur are on number two, and if we don’t hurry we’re going to fall behind—”

Harry cleared his throat. “Okay. So you wait a bit longer to have kids, what’s the big deal?”

“The big deal is, Ron’s decided to quit the Aurors and go to work with George. He feels this is a step up for him, and that I should therefore give up being a Healer and stay home to raise babies.” Hermione groaned. “We’ve been fighting about it the past few weeks, and then I discovered he’d been slipping Fertility Potion into my tea.”

Harry gasped. “He what?”

“I know!” Hermione raised her eyes to meet his. “I tasted something odd in my tea one morning, and I tested it. Once I identified it, I was so angry I stormed home, only he wasn’t there, so I tracked him down. He was at a local Christmas market buying gifts.”

“Okay,” said Harry. “So you went home and—”

Hermione shook her head. “No, I confronted him right there, in public.”

“Well fuck,” Harry whispered.

“I told him he was sabotaging me and that I knew what he was trying to do. At first he denied it, but then he finally admitted it. He said it was Molly’s suggestion and that she figured I’d settle down once he got me pregnant.”

“Damn,” whispered Harry.

“It escalated from there. I said I could report him for trying to poison me, and I told him the only reason Molly’s being so pushy is because he lets her.”

“Mmhm.” Harry clasped her hands. “So far it sounds awful, but you still love each other, right?”

“Yes.” Hermione clung to Harry. “The only thing is, I then accused him of being jealous of my career. And I said just because he’s a failure as an Auror didn’t mean I should have to sacrifice my career.”

“Merlin.”

Hermione nodded. “He went white, stared at me as if he’d never seen me before, and left the market without a word, even left his bags sitting there. The people managing the stalls were all staring… it was awful! Anyway, I haven’t seen him since.”

“When was that?”

“Two days ago.” Hermione groaned. “And I can’t Floo call the Burrow and ask if he’s there! Molly would probably hex me six ways from Sunday.”

“What about Ginny? George?” Harry suggested.

“They’d have to be on his side, wouldn’t they?” Hermione shook her head. “I went to my parents’ house for a couple of days, and only just got back to the house this morning when you called.” She leaned in. “You haven’t seen him, have you?”

“No.” Harry sighed. “Of course, Draco and I were in a remote cabin the mountains, and everyone knew we were going, so he probably thinks we’re still there.” He frowned. “Why didn’t you say something when I Flooed you earlier? You have too much on your mind to worry about Lucius.”

“I jumped at the chance because you needed me, and I figured immersing myself in a project would help me forget everything.” Hermione sighed. “Only then we ran into that Auror, who reminded me of Ron, and I didn’t count on how being inside the Ministry would affect me.”

“I’m sorry, Hermione.” Harry sat back, releasing her hands. “If you need to go home, Draco and I can handle the Lucius situation ourselves. You need to find Ron.”

“I know.” Hermione covered her face with her hands. “I just can’t believe I said those things to him! I didn’t mean them. Not really, I guess I did, but I would never have said them to his face. I feel terrible about it.”

Harry nodded. “I’m sure. Sounds like you definitely need to talk to him.”

“I know, but how do I find him?”

“Have you tried sending a Patronus?” Harry paused, his mind for some inexplicable reason going back to the mysterious owl. “Or an owl?”

“No.” Hermione laughed weakly. “Why didn’t that occur to me?”

“It’s often hard to see things clearly when you’re in the situation,” said Harry.

“When did you get so wise?” Hermione smiled. “Maybe I’m lucky you and Draco are such a perfect couple.”

Harry snorted. “We’re far from perfect. Anyway, do you have some books for Draco to look at? I can take them to him at the Manor, and he can Floo with questions.”

“Sounds good.” Reaching into her bag, she pulled out four huge books. “He should start with these, and by the time he’s done, I should have some more ideas.”

“Thanks, Hermione.” Harry hugged her. “And I bet everything will be okay with you guys.”

Hermione exhaled. “I hope you’re right.”

I do like a prompt fic series, because there's absolutely no chance of guessing which way it will go.
