Going Home: Part Twenty-One
~
The Hogwarts elf who opened the door to them seemed….Well, the only word Harry could think of was gobsmacked. “We is not accepting visitors,” he squeaked, blinking up at all of them.
“Nevertheless, we’re here to speak with Severus Snape,” Narcissa said. “Please let him know.”
That resulted in a shocked look, some ear tugging, and the door slamming in their faces.
Harry frowned. “Right. That was different.”
“Hogwarts has become a lot less friendly since we attended school here,” said Draco. “And we had a Dark wizard trying to get in.”
Harry gave him a flat look.
Draco rolled his eyes. “Fine. Yes. I’m the one who let his Dark minions in. Still, you must admit, that was rude.”
Hermione was looking up at the sky, her expression worried. “If they don’t let us in soon, we’re going to freeze out here.”
“I doubt it will come to that,” said Harry. “Although it is odd we’ve been left out here for so long.”
“Maybe this is standard for when there are no children in residence?” Draco suggested.
“Perhaps.” And Narcissa was the only one who seemed…unsurprised by the elf’s reaction. When Harry stared inquiringly at her, however, she simply smiled blandly at him.
Draco huffed, hugging himself and stamping his feet. “Maybe we did the spell wrong?” he said to Hermione.
Hermione shook her head. “We did it correctly. He’s here.”
“If you say so.” Draco frowned. “Although one does wonder why Severus would be here if the students are gone.” He paused. “Actually, given how he feels about children, I wonder why he’d be here at any time of year.”
Just then, the door opened to reveal Minerva McGonagall standing there. “Harry, Hermione?” She blinked. “Along with Draco and Narcissa. My goodness, do come in, it’s cold out there.”
They all stepped inside, Harry automatically looking up at the ceiling. He was vaguely disappointed to see it looked normal.
McGonagall spotted his disappointment. “I’m afraid we don’t bother with the charms during holidays when there are no students in residence,” she said to him, a slight smile on her face.
Harry smiled back. “Yeah, that makes sense, I guess I never really thought about it.”
“Of course you didn’t. Students rarely think about such things.” Eyebrow raised, McGonagall looked around at all of them. “Well, you’ve come a long way. Obviously, this will be quite the conversation. Let’s all go to my office so we can be comfortable, shall we?”
Since she turned away immediately and began walking towards the stairs, they had no choice but to follow.
Once they arrived at her office, McGonagall invited them all to sit. “Now,” she said, “what can I do for you?”
Narcissa cleared her throat, and McGonagall immediately turned to face her. “We are looking for Severus Snape, and we have reason to believe he’s here.”
“Severus? Here?” Sitting back in her chair, McGonagall raised an eyebrow. “You are aware Severus was declared dead after the Battle of Hogwarts, are you not?”
Noticing her careful choice of language, Harry shot a look at Draco, who smirked. “Declared dead isn’t the same as actually being dead,” he said.
“What exactly are you saying?” McGonagall asked, a look of polite inquiry on her face. “Are you claiming Severus is alive, Unspeakable Malfoy?”
Draco nodded. “We are.”
“I see.” McGonagall pursed her lips. “And you have proof of this claim?”
Hermione coughed and leaned forward in her chair. “You should be aware, we’ve actually seen him and spoken to him since his supposed death, Headmistress.”
McGonagall went still. “Hermione,” she said, tone soft, “are you sure this all isn’t wishful thinking? I mean, Severus was my close friend and I miss him, too, but—”
“It’s fine, Minerva,” came a voice and they all spun in their chairs to see Snape, clad in a thin dressing gown, emerge from an adjoining room. “Draco and Healer Granger located me last year, it’s no surprise they tracked me down again.”
Just before the door closed, Harry caught a glimpse of what looked like a bathroom. It was softly lit, with a decorated Christmas tree and greenery lining the large bathtub easily large enough to contain two people. It looked undeniably romantic, and Harry’s entire world view shifted in that moment.
Mouth open, Harry sent Draco a look. Draco, his eyes as wide as Harry’s probably were, stared right back at him, clearly shocked. Hermione, too, looked gobsmacked. And Narcissa…Harry narrowed his eyes. Narcissa looked completely relaxed, a slight smile playing about her lips.
Snape walked around McGonagall’s desk to stand beside her chair. “Now,” he said, spearing each one of them with a piercing look, “would you care to explain why you have decided to interrupt my private holiday with Minerva?”
