So I've seen a couple of people do this, and since I wholeheartedly agree, I'm doing it, too. :P

CANON!

Whatever fandom universe in which you create, please KNOW YOUR CANON.
Now, I reserve the right to mess with canon as suits my mood, but I know Harry Potter, so I can do that. And you can do it, too, but you gotta know what's real and what's not.
Also, for Harry Potter, as far as I'm concerned, canon is THE BOOKS.
Not Cursed Child, not the movies, not even Pottermore (although I do use things I like from those sources, which I reserve the right to do because, say it with me, I know canon).
I admit, I will sometimes torture ask the people I'm in slashchat with a question, but they know canon, too. *g*

Also, if it's not in canon, I consult Google. Google knows things. ;)

What is this slashchat you speak of?

Ah, I used to have a few chats on AIM but that's GONE. I remember drabble chats and all sorts of prompts chats back in the days.

I'm interested in your thoughts regarding Cursed Child as not canon. Having seen it I would certainly take it as one possible canon extension. Particularly the portrayal of Scorpius Malfoy, although that probably has as much to do with the ability of the actor as to the plot.

But, at the risk of being cast out into outer darkness, aren't some of the elements of the later HP books a form of fanfic of the earlier ones? (If you're interested, my play review is here with some added thoughts in my response to the comments.) I liked the main plot, and I certainly liked the connection between Scorpius and Albus.

I do understand about the need to read the source material - I'm in the ACD (book-verse) Sherlock Holmes fandom and we have similar problems.

I did once write a SGA ficlet, when I've never seen the series. It was the equivalent of a muggle mother writing to their child who's just started at Hogwarts, so knowledge is patchy and dodgy in parts. In my case I also had Brumeier read it through.

Hee, canon is the best. I always try to refresh myself with canon. :D
