This week's Friday Five is all about hurricanes, and reminds me to bid everyone in the Hurricane Florence affected zones to BE SAFE and watch for flooding. *hugs you all*

1. Have you ever experienced a hurricane firsthand?

Yes I have. I grew up in Jamaica and hurricanes were a yearly occurrence. We had a very stable house (dad's second job was as a building contractor), so I remember watching them and loving the way the wind whipped at the trees. It was only when I grew older that I came to appreciate the devastation they can cause. :(

2. Have you ever experienced outside heat over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celcius)?

Oh yes. I live in a place now where it routinely gets over 100 degrees in July and August. Although I must admit, this year was odd in that we had only a week or so of truly atrocious over 100 degree weather.

3. When and where was the coldest temperature you have ever experienced?

Hm. I have to say probably Syracuse, New York where I went to medical school. I remember as a medical student having to slog through blinding snow in sub-zero temperatures. *shudders*

4. Is your household prepared for a possible power outage of two to seven days?

In my last house we would have been since we put in a generator. Not as much in this house, alas, since the layout precludes us putting in another generator. Depending on the time of year we'd prolly have to relocate to a hotel to make it.

5. Do you have a go bag?

Not a bag per se. We have a storm shelter (we live in a tornado zone) which is stocked, but if we had to leave the house quickly we'd be in trouble. I suppose that wouldn't be a bad idea. *adds to list of things I should do at some point*

I was just reading recently about an international Red Cross worker who has a "go bag" that she carries at all times and stashes next to the door of wherever she is (water, money, passport, extra phone and sim cards, change of clothes, energy bars). When she was in Nepal to help after the earthquake, she was the only person in her building who was able to get her stuff when they had to evacuate during an aftershock. I was thinking I ought to make something similar (if a little less intense), and now your post makes the same point. This is a sign if I ever saw one!

Glad you have a storm shelter.
