“Happy Christmas, Mum,” Neville whispered, kissing her cheek.
Alice stared ahead blankly.
Neville sighed, settling on the edge of her bed. “Bill...my husband, remember?” At her blank stare he continued. “He suggested I decorate.”
Looking at the holly and ivy he’d strewn about, he smiled. “It’s actually festive.”
The bundle in his arms squirmed, making Neville grin. “Meet Mitten, our kitten. She’s the closest you’ll get to a grandchild.”
Mitten mewled, crawling into Alice’s lap, and, to Neville’s shock, Alice began stroking her. “Mum?”
Alice smiled at him.
Neville cried, thankful for the best present he could have expected.
