Salt and Pepper Fest Reveals!
Mar. 21st, 2016 01:37 pmThe
hp_goldenage Salt and Pepper Fest reveals are up, which means I can claim the fic I wrote.
It's an unusual one by my standards since it's gen and focuses on a character I don't often spotlight, Minerva McGonagall.
If interested, you can read it at the fest, In Celebration of New Friendships, although I will be reposting it in my journals soon.
And now for some writing babble. ;)
One of my writing goals for several years now has been to write more gen. Not that there's anything wrong with pairing fic, I mean, I certainly write enough of it, but there are so many fascinating characters in and odd facets about the HP universe that remain unexplored (especially for those of us who choose to ignore the constant Pottermore revelations) that I've always wanted to write more character-centric fic.
Minerva was a fascinating character because she touches everyone. She's either taught them or went to school with them, or is a contemporary of them, so I thought a story featuring how she sees her former students would be an interesting exercise. And it was!
I did get stuck a couple of times (thank you
torino10154 for helping get me unstuck), mainly because I'm less sure writing Minerva than I am, say, Severus, for whom I have a very distinct head canon. She's such a strong character, and there are people who love her a lot, so I wanted to be true to canon and to the fanon view of her as well, an interesting road to walk, LOL.
Having her interact with characters with whom I'm more familiar (Harry, Hermione) helped, but then Horace came in and I was working with two characters for whom I don't have a specific head canon. Oi. Feedback on the fic assured me that my Horace worked (whew!) and in the end I really enjoyed the way their interaction came out.
And speaking of feedback, I was blown away by the lovely, thoughtful comments I received! All comments are love, of course, but these were especially fun since they allowed me the opportunity to have a conversation with the commenters, something I love. :)
So, expect more gen fic from me, since this is something I want to explore.
Anyway, this was all to say that I had fun in this fest, enjoyed a lot of the submissions (see my rec posts here and here) and I hope to participate again sometime. :)
