Going Home: Part Nineteen

“Well that’s it, isn’t it?” hissed Lucius from the bed. “I’m done for. Narcissa, you know where my last will and testament is located, and—”
Harry rolled his eyes. “Oh, for— Stop being dramatic, Mr Malfoy. Of course I’ll donate some of my essence to save you. You’re Draco’s father!”
Draco turned to look at Harry. “You will?”
Harry shook his head. “Aren’t you the one who’s always teasing me about being too self-sacrificing?” Leaning in, he kissed Draco. “Of course I will.”
“Actually,” interjected Hermione. “I’m afraid it’s not that simple, Harry.”
Something about Hermione’s tone of voice made Harry frown. “What do you mean?”
“This cure doesn’t just require some of your magical essence, it requires all of it.”
“What?” Draco cried. “But that could—”
“Kill Harry, yes.” Hermione sighed. “Or, given how powerful he is, at the very least leave him without magic.”
Harry swallowed hard. “There must be another way.”
Hermione shook her head. “If we could locate another wizard who defeated Voldemort, perhaps. But even then, who’s going to agree to give up all their magic for Lucius?”
“I would do it,” said Narcissa.
Lucius looked up at her. “Unfortunately, darling, unless you had some encounter with the Dark Lord about which I am unaware, you can’t do this for me.”
Draco squeezed Harry’s hand. “If you’ll excuse us, Harry and I need to talk.”
“Actually,” said Narcissa, “so do Lucius and I.”
“Of course.” Hermione started for the door. “There are some potions that can make him more comfortable. I can send for some of those from hospital.”
“Thank you,” said Narcissa.
Once outside, Draco looked around, then pulled Harry towards another door. Hermione hovered uncertain behind them. “If you want to be private—”
“No, I think I’d like you there,” said Harry.
“Agreed,” said Draco.
Nodding, Hermione followed them.
Draco pulled him into an office lined with bookshelves. There was a small sitting area with a sofa and a couple of chairs and they all faced a fireplace. On the mantel was a collection of assorted nutcrackers of all shapes and sizes. There were even life-sized ones on either side, standing guard.
“What a lovely room,” said Hermione. She picked up one of the nutcrackers, admiring it before putting it back down.
With a flick of his fingers Draco lit the fire and pulled Harry towards the sofa. Hermione sat in a chair. “First thing we need to get out of the way,” said Draco, facing Harry, “is that under no circumstances am I allowing you to sacrifice your magic or your life for my father.”
Harry smiled faintly. “Who says I was going to?”
Draco snorted. “Are you mad? I could see the wheels turning in your head. Plus, I know how you think. So, before you get too embroiled in the idea, it isn’t happening. Clear?”
“Crystal,” said Harry, kissing him.
Draco kissed him back ferociously, and Harry almost forgot anyone else was there until Hermione cleared her throat. “There may be another way,” she said.
Dragging his mouth from Draco’s, Harry looked at her. “What other way?”
“The cure calls for the distilled magical essence from a wizard who defeated the caster. It didn’t say who killed, just defeated.”
Harry nodded. “Yes. But, as we’ve already established, Dumbledore’s the only other one who’s done that.”
“Well,” said Hermione, staring at Draco, “there is one other who technically defeated him.”
“Who?” Draco’s eyes went wide. “Oh. But he’ll never agree. Everyone thinks he’s dead.”
“Who?” asked Harry, frowning at the way Hermione and Draco were looking at each other. “What aren’t you telling me?”
“Harry,” said Hermione carefully, “don’t be cross, but someone who you thought was dead is actually alive.”
“Okay. Who?”
“Severus,” whispered Draco.
Harry almost choked. “Snape?! That’s impossible! I saw him die.” He gestured at Hermione. “We saw him die!”
“Actually, thinking back, his appearance looked more like he was in a self-induced trance—” Hermione paused as Draco shook his head. “Right. Anyway, neither of us were Healers at the time, so we were hardly experts.”
“You mean to tell me Snape is alive and you’re just now telling me?”
Draco coughed. “He swore us to secrecy.”
“Wait, you’ve spoken to him?” Harry shook his head. “What the fuck? How…when…?”
“It was an accident,” said Hermione. “You remember when I did a rotation in the Department of Mysteries?”
Harry snorted. “Of course I do. I honestly thought I was going to have to separate you two because you were bickering all the time.” He frowned. “Until you became friends almost overnight. Wait, is discovering Snape was alive the reason you became friends?”
Hermione smiled. “You could say that. We were arguing over the magic of that curtain, you know the one Sirius fell through?” Harry nodded. “Anyway, it occurred to Draco that perhaps he could pull someone back through, and he wanted to try for Snape.”
Draco shrugged as Harry looked at him. “What? He was one of Father’s best friends, and I thought perhaps his ghost could talk some sense into my parents. It was back when they were trying to drive me away.”
“Only every ghost or shade we caught said no such person was there.” Hermione shook her head. “It was Draco who came up with the idea to ask the elves.”
Harry blinked. “And they knew?”
“Oh yes. They know everything Hogwarts knows,” said Draco. “They told us that not only was he not dead, but that he was thriving.”
“So we showed up on his doorstep,” said Hermione. “Needless to say, he wasn’t pleased.”
“We promised him we wouldn’t reveal his location or his secret to anyone.” Draco smiled, clasping Harry’s hand. “Not even spouses.”
Harry sighed. “Okay. Leaving aside the fact that you hid this from me, how can Snape help in this situation? He never fought Voldemort.”
“Snape never duelled Voldemort, true,” said Hermione. “But I’d say managing to thwart him at every turn, thus allowing you to kill him could be considered defeating Voldemort.”
Harry pursed his lips. “Convoluted, but it could work. The big question is, how do we persuade Snape not only to return but to donate his essence?”
“Leave that to me,” said Narcissa, standing at the door.

Date: 2017-12-21 04:57 am (UTC)And yes, Severus cold prove...stubborn. :)
Also, FYI, the coding was screwed up when I first posted it, so you should prolly skim it again since it may make more sense now.

Date: 2017-12-20 01:47 pm (UTC)I did like Lucius initial reaction, and him being a typical Dramaqueen, and of course Harry will do what he can.

Date: 2017-12-21 05:07 am (UTC)So, number 1, Snape is always alive in my fics unless explicitly stated otherwise. No body, no portrait, no funeral, no death.
Number 2, fanfic is ALL ABOUT resurrecting dead characters.
Which leads me to number 3, I'm not going to tell you whether or not your 'fear' is correct, but if I decide to do that, then I shall. After all, that's what we do in fanfic. :)
Also, FYI, the coding was screwed up when I first posted it, so you should prolly skim it again since it may make more sense now.

Date: 2017-12-21 09:11 am (UTC)With the added information that all of Harry's magical essence would be needed to make the cure, the entire chapter reads differently and of course then it makes sense to have Serverus alive, so that they can share the burden.

Date: 2017-12-22 07:08 pm (UTC)*nods* I wasn't aware of the coding snafu until Enchanted jae brought it to my attention.
I'm glad it makes more sense now and that Severus' appearance (hopefully) isn't too much of a red herring.
And yes, since I'm unlikely to kill Harry off in a Christmas story ( or any story, really, LOL) I figured this would be a good way to bring Severus back. *g*
Sorry to jump all over you, and yay that the actual chapter reads better. :)
