So I have been pondering this and I'm not sure if I know the answer. Maybe you all can help me.
What exactly constitutes character bashing?

I posted a trio fic yesterday in which I warned for Ginny bashing. I warned because, well, in chat a couple of nights ago people were saying how much they hated it when people indulge in Ginny bashing. It made me wonder if I 'Ginny bash'. I suspect that Ginny lovers would think I do.

I have come to the conclusion that I write Ginny the way I do because JK made Ginny so, well, 'bashable'.

What do we know about Ginny? She was obsessed with the idea of Harry Potter from the moment she entered the scene in the books. We know she sort of hung in the background, we know she's a powerful witch, we know she's pretty, and we know Hermione helped her by giving her advice on how to attract Harry.

I think if JK had given us more to work with than Harry had a chest monster/revelation/brain fart one day when he saw Ginny kissing Dean it would make more sense to me, but as it stands, all I see is Ginny being the baby sister of Harry's best friend and having a bit of a creepy obsession with Harry (and using Dean to get him). Consequently, I typically write her as a tad obsessed and insane, what I would consider to be IC.

So, am I bashing? Or am I calling it like I see it?
